LENSA TENOM 02: Tun Mustapha Bridge

Connecting Tenom and Kemabong is a 40 plus years old plus bridge. Construction started in 1972 and finished in 1974. Prior to it, Tenom residents crossed Padas River via a ferry service provided by the locals. When it is monsoon or the tide is too strong, they will use a boat instead to crossover. The aforementioned bridge was named after Tun Datu Mustapha, Sabah’s father of independance. The condition of the bridge now however, is very much a concern for the locals. They were tired of empty promises and sweet talk on repairing and upgrading the bridge. Some external repairs were done over the years of course, however much of the bridge’s initial structure had shown wear and tear with the floor level dropping several feet from its initial level. Stories of promises to repair the bridge can be found as early as 2007 and 2011. In 1995, a metal bridge in nearby Tomani collapsed due to heavy load by timber trucks. They don’t want a repeat of that incident to happen again.
